Getting to know Wisbech

The capital of the Fens, Wisbech is a great place to get away from everything for a day out. Take a short break and visit the historic home of MAHI's hot sauces. Accommodations range from historic town centre hotels to charming B&Bs in rural settings and charming self-catering cottages.

Wisbech is known for its elegant Georgian architecture, a legacy of a time when the town was an important trading hub. See some fine Georgian houses as you stroll along the Brinks and around the Crescent. You can also visit Peckover House and Gardens, once the home of the Peckovers, a Quaker banking family, and now a National Trust property open to visitors three or four afternoons a week from spring to autumn.

North Brink offers a completely different kind of Georgian architecture. Almost unchanged for more than 200 years, Elgood's Brewery and Gardens was one of the first Georgian breweries built outside London. If you are visiting Elgood's brewery or visiting one of its pubs, you can sample its award-winning real ales.

If you're a historian, Wisbech has two museums; the Wisbech in the Crescent and an Octavia Hill Birthplace House on South Brink. An English museum of ancient history, the Wisbech and Fenland Museum is one of the oldest in the country. In addition to being a museum, it is also home to two historic libraries and a substantial archive, which holds diocesan and borough records. You can also find the original manuscript of Charles Dickens' novel, Great Expectations. Also in Wisbech is one of the oldest surviving Georgian theatres in the country. This intimate theatre has just 112 seats and hosts a variety of drama, dance and music in a cosy setting.

The town of Wisbech is justifiably proud of its 38 acres of open space. Keep Britain Tidy has awarded St Peter's Church Gardens a Green Flag in recognition of the continued hard work of volunteers and Fenland District Council's open spaces team in upholding the high standards expected of the scheme.

The award comes at a time when Wisbech attempts to win its 11th consecutive gold in the regional Anglia In Bloom contest and hopes to advance to the finals of national Britain In Bloom competition. BBC2 also selected the town for its new Britain In Bloom series. Camera crews followed the volunteers for a few months, ready for the series to air in spring 2018. St Peter's Church Gardens' Green Flag award, now in its third decade, shows the public that the garden is maintained to the highest standards and has excellent visitor facilities.

In the heart of the town centre, this tranquil and majestic garden boasts attractive bedding displays, rose gardens, a sensory garden, and many mature trees. Additionally, with its links to the town's Merchant Trail, the gardens received a commendation for Innovation.

The Merchants Trail is a leisurely walk around Wisbech that tells the story of the many famous characters of the town and the reason why Wisbech became one of the most prosperous ports in the country during the 18th and 19th centuries.

There are over 12 acres of land in Wisbech Park, which is located in Bowthorpe Conservation Area. It has hundreds of mature trees in addition to wide open spaces and is a five-minute walk from the town centre.

There is a tennis court, a multi-use games area for basketball and five-a-side football, as well as two children play areas.

While strolling through the park, you will notice wood sculptures carved from old tree trunks, formal bedding displays and a bandstand.

After exploring all these delights, if you still have time, you can visit the local markets and produce auctions were freshly grown fruit and vegetables are plentiful and inexpensive. The main market days are Thursday and Saturday in Wisbech, where a wide range of market traders take part.
