New studies show that plant-based diets have multiple health benefits for men

Plant-based diets improve men's health in several key ways, according to three new studies.

The benefits include decreased risks of prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction, as well as lowering PSA levels, which is linked to a healthier prostate. 

Studies are published in The Journal of Urology, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Urological Association.

 

Decreased prostate cancer risk

Plant-based diets and prostate cancer risk have been studied over 28 years. Every four years, more than 47,000 men on varying diets were assessed by collecting questionnaire data.

According to their findings, plant-based diets lower the risk of cancer death. In addition, men under 65 on diets free from animal products had a decreased risk of developing prostate cancer.

The authors point out that fewer than 1% of men followed a 'strict' vegetarian or vegan diet in the study.

 

Plant-based diets lower PSA levels

More in-depth research was published in the same journal on prostate health. Its aim was to see how diets affect prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, which are produced in the prostate.

Raised PSA levels may indicate problems with the prostate, according to Prostate Cancer UK.

We assessed 1,399 men using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

According to the authors, there is a 'significant' association between eating a plant-based diet - consisting of plant-based whole foods - and lower PSA levels.

Erectile dysfunction study

In a study titled Plant-Based Diets Are Associated With Decreased Risk Of Erectile Dysfunction, the same database was examined.

According to a study of 2,549 men, plant-based diets have varying effects on dietary patterns and erection frequency.

The authors also claim that ‘healthy’ plant-based diets are linked to decreased chances of having erectile dysfunction.

The study's lead author, Dr. Stacy Loeb, said: "These three studies show that dietary interventions can impact both general health as well as specific urologic conditions that affect millions of men.".

"Plant-based diets have significant benefits for urologic and sexual health."
